Wenger 100 Year Anniversary Standard Issue(Sold)

Here is a Wenger Standard Issue or "Soldier" knife that is given to members of the Swiss military. This one is a special 100 year anniversary model with engraving "100 Jahre" on the blade. It is a 1990 model year knife with the tang stamp on the back of the main blade reading "90", and housed in a very nice luxury presentation box. While most Wenger Standard Issue SAK's have a bail this one does not. I just happen to have the original order reciept and COA for this one. The scales are made of an aluminum alloy for durability. There are only 4 blades that open.

1.Main Knife Blade
2.Can Opener
3.Bottle Opener
4.Awl/Reamer

Red Alox Pioneer Pruner Victorinox

Here is something a little different. It is a Victorinox Red Alox Pioneer Pruner with Avenor company logo and blue cross shield on the front. This knife has only the 2 blades, 1 being a rare pruner type blade. Very few Victorinox knives have this blade. The "Alox" handles are an aluminum alloy material and feel nice to hold and use. This model sports the older style plain cross shield in blue to match the company logo.

McDonald's Corporation Bijou

The golden arches, McDonalds corporation, is inlaid in metal on this Victorinox Bijou model. Basically a Bijou is a Classic without a keyring. I have seen a couple of McDonalds designs on these type of knives and this is the nicer one with the full arches and name too. I would have thought a yellow and red coloration would have been more appropriate

Victorinox Rover Golfer

This is one of many kinds of Victorinox Golfer type knives. This knife happens to be a Rover model with a Divot Tool instead of a nail file. It has a nice image of a golfer on the front as well. Golf courses and tournaments would sometimes order these type of knives from Victorinox with the golf course name or tournament name printed on side. Some of these knives came with removable or retractable ink pens that were held in the toothpick slot. There are several types of these knives and in many colors but red, black and green are the main colors found with these type of knives. Victorinox makes several sizes of golfing knife including a larger version. Wenger makes an almost dedicated type of golfing knife with several instruments just for a golfer on the course. Photos of these can be seen in some of my photo albums.

Victorinox Diplomat-Dimpled Stainless Steel classic

This stainless steel handled knife is beautiful. It looks similar to a sterling silver version but it is easy to tell since there are no Sterling or other Silver markings. There is a dimpled pattern to the entire case front and back. The Swiss Army Cross and Shield is done with an enamel. There is a small flat blank area for use as an engraving panel. The normal compliment of tools are there with the newer style screwdriver tip being on the end of the nail file.

Blue Marbled Victorinox Deluxe model

This is a unique Victorinox knife. It is a 58 mm classic sized metal handled in a blue marble look. The heft to the knife indicates the all metal handle and the color of the metal is gold or brass. It has the usual assortment of blade, fingernail file and scissors. I have a maroon colored one as well. The color of the handle seems to be some kind of applied material since it has a few small chips around the edges in a couple of places. If anyone has any details about this knife about when it was produced or the model name or number please pass the info along.

Victoria Victorinox "Aladdins Lamp" Bijou

Here is an oldie.
This is a nice old Victoria tang stamped classic with Aladdin's Lamp instead of the regular Swiss Army Cross and Shield. Notice the old style cut fingernail file and single leaf scissor spring. This one has the original metal tipped tweezers too. Sweet knife in tip-top shape too! Kinda makes you wonder who ordered these

Swiss Army Watch knife!

OK, so here is a sweet little knife. Its a genuine Victorinox classic signature with sapphire handles and it has the Victorinox Swiss Army Watch logo on the one side that has the retractable pen in it. I have never seen another like it. Maybe it was made for some company that sells Victorinox watches, who knows. I asked around and it seems that it was not a regular Victorinox offering so it must be an advertising knife.

Cleaning and Polishing Swiss Army Knives/Knife handles

Here is another example of what cleaning and polishing the outside handles of a couple common SAK's look before and after. I use an assortment of about 9 different grits super fine emery cloths(2400-12000) with water to clean and polish the handles while they are still attached to the knife. This is helpful since you do not need to remove the handles, possibly damaging them further. Metal inlays like the shield will be OK as long as it is not already coming off someplace. Note the red Wenger has several deep scratches and would require more work and more material taken off to completely make them look super smooth. The white Victorinox Executive had normal pocket wear and some red overall tinting from rubbing. It looks almost like new after about 30 minutes of work.

SAK Cleaning techniques

I have cleaned so many Swiss Army knives of different sizes and have come up with the best ways on how to clean and lubricate them.In this segment I will explain a little trick I use to clean those pesky nail files that get all nasty with crap.

First thing is you need to go buy yourself a gun cleaning kit of 3 brushes. I usually find them in Wal-Mart sporting goods for around $3. There will be a nylon bristle, steel bristle and a brass bristle brush inside. The nylon brush is the brush I use the most for general cleaning but in this segment the "steel" brush is what I use to clean that crap off the nail files. Just brush the nail file for about 15-20 seconds and that usually will clean most stuff off. If you have something that is resisting, just take a small knife blade and scrape it slightly until it loosens up and can be brushed off.

See some of my photo examples.

Victorinox Emergency Blade Classic

Here is a unique little knife. It may look like a common classic but this one has an emergency style blade instead of the regular pen knife blade common to most all Victorinox Classic knives you see. All the other tools are the same as a regular classic. This blade is usually only seen in Mini-Champ versions of the Victorinox Classic sized knives. According to Victorinox it is called an emergency blade. Why? You tell me if you know. LOL

According to information I have gathered the Emergency blade was fashioned after a surgical blade and called the Emergency blade to perform emergency incisions or other fine cutting where a very fine point and sharp edge were needed. Some other branded pocket knives from the 1950's and up had similar blades and were purposed for the same usage.

Old Wenger Handwerker Handworker

Here is an unusual Wenger SAK. This one I was told was called "The HandWerker" and it was a European model not released here in the US. It has older style handles with rivets showing through, and squared off ends. I have never seen another Wenger quite like it. The tools are;
  1. Large Spearpoint Blade
  2. Wood Saw
  3. Pruner Blade
  4. Bottle Opener with Flat Screwdriver Tip
  5. Awl/Reamer
These knives were made for the European market only out of left over parts and usually had dated blades the same as the Standard Issue.

The Awl has the tip broke off and the Pruner blade has a small chip in the edge. Another interesting thing is the steel seems to be different than what I am used to seeing on a Wenger brand knife. Instead of being real smooth and super chrome like shiny it has a kind of texture to it
and is almost gray in color.

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Well, its about time that I talk about my obsession with pocket knives and Swiss Army Knives. When I was about 4 years old I nearly cut my finger off after asking my Dad if I could close his pocket knife, I have been in love with pocket knives ever since. My Mom was very upset with my Dad for some reason though. LOL
My first knife was a cheap fishing type knife, probably an Imperial or Colonial brand but I do not remember. It had the fish hook disgorger and a rather long blade. It did not take me long to get it all rusted up since it stayed in my tackle box most of the time. Later on I bought a Frontier,(Schrade) Double Eagle lock back with a belt sheath. That knife I learned how to sharpen with a whetstone. My Dad always used water and a cheap stone right in the kitchen sink with the water running. I bought and learned to use an Arkansas stone with honing oil.
My next knife was a gift from an uncle of mine. He bought me a large Schrade + LB7 lock back with leather belt sheath. At the time I thought it was huge! It is a large knife, 5 inches closed and 8 and 3/4 inches opened. Since I started earning my own money I have been buying knives that I liked and could afford. I have a Puma Boot Knife that ran me about $30 way back in the late 1970's. It is like new and hardly used. I have and still do own several Old-Timers.
Now an adult, (well I might be grown up but do not really feel like an adult), I bought my first SAK from eBay in 2000. It was a Victorinox Spartan with plain red cellidor handles. I have bought many since that time. Many for using and many for just collecting. More to come......
