Vintage Wenger Dog-Leg Can Opener, This is a vintage Wenger from the early 1970's or late 1960's. The can opener is called a dog-leg style due to its shape. It is made so you pierce the can and then rock the leg up and down to cut the metal on the upward cut. There are a couple styles with one having a longer "leg" than this one. I think the longer leg version is older as it does not have the diagram on it as the other one does.
This is the older vintage ribbed Victorinox Cadet in red alox. Here is a like new model compared to a well worn model. This is an 84mm sized knife when closed. It has a main blade, secondary small blade(clip pointed on older pieces), can opener, bottle opener and keyring. The shield is a triangular shield and is more often found on Elinox knives(made by Victorinox) that is no longer used except for economy style SAK's. The modern Cadets have a checkered alox scale in a variety of colors while these older ones only come in silver and red alox. These have become more of a collectors item when in such good shape as this one. These older vintage scales can be had in other configurations like a Bantam with cap lifter or combo tool or Voyager with scissors and cap lifter or combo tool. This is a Victorinox Classic which has been modified by Coach. It has red leather covers with the Coach brand label embossed into the leather. These are pretty hard to find in good condition, and with the Coach name they are expensive. These come in several colors, red, dark brown, tan or beige, black, olive green and maybe blue. The leather wears poorly getting stained with oils from your hands and other contaminates. The leather eventually cracks and splits easily exposing the red nylon scales of an economy scale below. The inserts are wrapped under the leather as well.

Se trata de un clásico de Victorinox que ha sido modificado por el entrenador. Tiene cubiertas de cuero rojo con la etiqueta de marca Coach en relieve en la piel. These 2 German Army knives are made by Victorinox. The main difference to notice is the hole in the main blade used for opening it. The early models had the oval hole while later more current models have a round hole. While I do not know why Victorinox changed this feature I am sure it was due to field use and any reported problems.

The CT29 is 20mm's wide and about 94 grams while the CT34 is 28mm's wide and about 155 grams in weight. The standard tools of a Spartan are included on the CT29 along with the special screwdriver bit driver tool. The CT34 adds a Scissors and a Pliers. The bits are #2 Phillips with 4mm Flat Head, #8 Torx with 4mm Hex, #10 Torx with #15 Torx and a #0 Pozidrive with #1 Pozidrive. There are 4 more optional bits that can be acquired. I shot these photos sometime back for a comparison between these 2 colors. The Stayglow scales are obviously new and ready to be installed onto any Victorinox 58mm knife I would like. The yellow scales are much darker yellow and these are attached to a brand new classic. The yellow scales are pretty but do not hold up well when carrying them everyday. They stain with dark colored marks easily and they loose their shine quickly too.
The Stayglow glow in the dark scales are a much lighter color and have a 2 color printed on shield. These scales glow in the dark for an average amount of time after being exposed to light. They are made of nylon while the yellow is cellidor. The Stayglow scales will get some marks especially if they are dark colored and the shield will wear off with use. I have also noticed that the Stayglow scales will accumulate pocket debris and dust inside the channels where the tweezers and toothpick go and this will show up easily on the outside.

Most readers of my blog are experienced or semi experienced collectors who are familiar with the differences of the varying Victorinox models. This post is mainly for those readers who have asked about comparisons between similar models of SAK. The Spartan is the modern design of the original "Officers Knife" from 1897 patents. It has changed slightly over the years to this modern form. The Tinker is a slight change from that model by replacing the corkscrew with a Phillips head screwdriver. All other tools remain the same. Some users of this model have noted that the can opener screwdriver tip is better suited for small Phillips head screws and also that the bottom mounted Phillips head screwdriver does not really allow for much torque to be applied before failure of the knife or tool itself.

Victorinox Classic versus Wenger Esquire. The Esquire blade is larger. Nail files - Wenger Esquire is longer with a nail cleaner tip while the Victorinox has a square screwdriver tip. Scissors - Wengers has serrated edges and can handle tough fabrics but fails at lightweight tasks like threads and slick things. Victorinox scissors are smaller and has a smooth edge and are easy to use. The Wenger scales overlap the metal liners and allows for chipping of the plastic on the ends when dropped. The Victorinox scales are even with the liners making it less likely to chip when dropped. The Victorinox inserts have large ends to help in removing them from the knife but sometimes they can catch on things and pull out by themselves. The Wenger inserts are slimmer and have small ends. They hide very well in the end of the knife and sometimes can be a pain to remove. The Wenger Toothpick is more fragile than the Victorinox counterpart. Both tweezers work well but the large end for the Victorinox makes it easier to hold and use. The Victorinox has a larger easier to use Key Ring than the standard Wenger version.
