Victorinox New Style German Army Knife Comparison

These 2 German Army knives are made by Victorinox. The main difference to notice is the hole in the main blade used for opening it. The early models had the oval hole while later more current models have a round hole. While I do not know why Victorinox changed this feature I am sure it was due to field use and any reported problems.

Victorinox 108mm Red Safari Pathfinder(Sold)

Here is another from the Victorinox Safari line of 108mm knives. This one is called the Pathfinder and is basically the same knife as the Trooper but without the bottom tools such as the corkscrew and awl/reamer. This is probably one of the harder to find models of the Safari series but it does still occasionally come up for sale.

Victorinox 108mm Red Safari Trooper(Sold)

This Victorinox red Safari Trooper is identical to the older German Army Knife from the late 1970's and 1980's except it has the red nylon scales with the Swiss Cross shield. These knives are 108mm long when closed and were developed after Victorinox obtained the contract to produce the GAK or German Army Knife. They decided to produce civilian models based upon the same size of knife. These are getting scarce in new condition but you can still find them for sale occasionally.

The knife has a large spear pointed main blade, a wood saw/combo tool which will open bottles and cans as well as being used as a flat screwdriver. There is also a corkscrew and a rather large awl/reamer. The scales are very durable and have a checkered grip with a lanyard hole at the end.

Victorinox Mauser Swiss Army Knife - 108mm

This Victorinox Mauser knife has an interesting background. It is based upon the 108mm size GAK or German Army Knife produced by Victorinox and several other manufacturers from around 1984 until 2001. According to Victorinox there were about 250,000 units made. Originally it came with a dark green box with Mauser logo and a booklet identifying the tools in several languages. The Mauser has an extra clip pointed blade added to the basic GAK and the Mauser logo added to the front scale. The clip blade has special writing including the Mauser logo and words saying it is officially licensed from Mauser Werke who produces military guns for the German Army and many other nations.

The knife has a spear pointed main blade with the Victorinox tang stamping. The clip pointed secondary blade does not have any tang stamping at all. There is a Wood Saw combo tool blade with a saw tooth protector, an awl/reamer and a corkscrew. The scales are made of OD Green nylon with a checkered finish and are very tough and durable. The Mauser logo is printed on in white in the flat blank area on the front scale. The knife is also equipped with a lanyard hole going all the way through the knife at the rear end of the knife. These knives have become very collectible.

This is one of the older discontinued 108mm models called a Hunter with beautiful fake stag scales. There were some real stag models made as well but they are pretty hard to find. It has a main blade, a smooth edge gutting blade and a combo tool wood saw on the top side as well as a corkscrew and an awl on the bottom side. The scales are made from plastic in a stag look. While it is hard to find these in new condition they are not rare like the genuine stag scaled Hunter. These knives were pretty popular back in the 1980's. The size comes from the older GAK that Victorinox and many other companies made for Germany. Victorinox made several models for civilian use. There is another Hunter model with plain red scales.

Custom Victorinox 108mm Single Clip Blade Hunter "Jung Jager"

This is another custom made from factory spare parts 108mm Victorinox Hunter with just a single clip blade and corkscrew. This is one of my favorites as it has my favorite blade style and is fairly light weight but robust feeling in your hand. There are no tang stamp markings but this piece was made from spare factory parts just as my other custom hunter knife was. It has the standard red nylon "Safari" line of scales with Swiss cross. This knife was commissioned by Swissbianco Roger and he called it the "Jung Jager" or Young Hunter in english.

Victorinox 108mm OD Green Trooper

This knife is the civilian version of the Victorinox made GAK or German Army Knife from the 1980's. The main differences are this one does not have the Bundeswehr military shield embossed into the front scale. Rather it has a plain empty rectangle where the shield would go. It is still dressed in Olive Drab Green military color scales and has all the exact same tools as the standard GAK.

Custom Victorinox 108mm Hunter(Sold)

This 108mm Victorinox knife is a custom made piece out of spare parts from the Victorinox factory. The main differences between this one and the standard 108mm Hunter is the Clip Point blade replaces the Wood Saw/Combo Tool. He(SwissBianco) did not install an awl on this custom knife either which is odd. I suppose they were short of Awl parts. The clip blade is not tang stamped, but the main spear point blade is Victorinox stamped. This one has the serrated version of the Gutting blade.

Victorinox Rucksack in OD Green

This is a Victorinox Rucksack model with OD Green nylon scales. The color is rather uncommon with this shield style here in North America and I placed a comparison photo with a Standard older GAK to show its color is the same. The shield is hot stamped into the scales. This model has the slide lock button on the back side.

Here is a standard GAK or German Army Knife from the 1980's with the "NATO" star designation on the handle. Most GAK's have the "Bundeswehr" Eagle on the scale but there were different other military organizations that were supplied with a model with their own insignia on it.
