Victorinox SAK Collectors Society 2014 Club Knife - Special Sea Pioneer model 2223. This model is similar to an older alox model number 2223. This one has modern red alox color scales with the modern Victorinox shield and an engraving plate on back with "VSAK Collectors Society". The main blade is etched on front with "Jahr 2014". There were less than 130 pieces made just for the VSAKCS.

The Victorinox Red Alox Sailor is a 93mm long knife in the closed position. It has 3 tools in a 2 layer design with checkered red alox scales. This knife has a long history starting back in the early 1960's and still being produced into the late 2000's. The early model number was 2208 and starting in 1986 the new model numbering system has it as 0.8080.20. This knife is one of the newer variety with the box clearly marked with the newer model number. It weighs about 65 gm's. I think the box this one is in is probably mid to late 1980's. The tools are a large main blade, a wood saw and a marlinspike. The marlinspike is primarily a marine tool designed to assist with ropes and knots. Due to the thickness of the marlinspike the back scale has a cutout for it to rest in to avoid contact with the blade that is in the same layer. These knives are typically sought after by the SAK collecting community.

Vintage Wenger Farmers type knife with fiber scales (HORN)

Here is an old Wenger with Crossbow marked Farmers type of knife made for a hard working farmer. A wood saw was always handy on the farm. The marlinspike was originally intended to be used as a sacking needle on the farm. Some other tools choices were a pruning blade, an electricians blade, and other shaped awls. This knife measures 94mm's closed. There are larger ones made as well in different configurations. The scales are of a durable type of fiber made to take a beating. The steel used was more of a higher carbon steel rather than stainless steel. There were higher grade scale choices available like animal horn. These knives were designed to be used by civilian population but many times ended up in military personnel's hands too.

Edit 11/11/2023; Upon further examination I think this knife has horn scales. I have added a couple new photos at the bottom. There are some subtle color variations on each side which lead me to believe it is horn.

Here is an old vintage Victoria single blade knife with fiber scales and fancy nickel-silver bolsters. These knives are seen in the various older catalog pages. They come in a couple different sizes with this one at 104mm's being one of the longest. These knives were made for farmers and others who worked outdoors and needed a strong well built knife blade. There were many different models made. Some included wood saws, pruning blades, electrician blades, sacking needles or marlin spikes as they are more commonly know by today. The steel used is of a high carbon steel type that is easy to sharpen.

Victorinox makes a couple of Sailing or Marine use knives in the large 111mm frame. This is called the Helmsman model and it has the basic openers, Awl/Reamer, Toothpick , Tweezers and keyring. It has a partially serrated main blade useful for cutting rope and it has the slide lock system locking blade. The special tool is a combination Marlin Spike/Shackle Opener with a sewing eye needle tip. The scales are blue scratch resistant nylon and has a 2 color printed shield and a white printed compass rosette.

I recently acquired this vintage red alox knife from Switzerland. It is an older red alox Victorinox Seaman model with the "Elinox" tang stamp. This knife has only the main blade and a marlinspike. As I have mentioned before, "Elinox" is a tang stamp name used by the Victorinox company created by using the family name "Elsener" and "Inox" a term used for stainless steel. This tang stamp was used between 1957-1974 according to Victorinox.

Old Wenger Farmer type knife

This is an older vintage Wenger Farmer's type knife. It is 93mm's long and has 3 blades in a 2 layer design. A knife blade, Wood Saw and a Sacking Needle or MarlinSpike as it is now more commonly known as. The "Sacking Needle" was originally used in the agriculture field to aid in sewing grain bags. Over time that job was automated by other machinery so the "Sacking Needle" came to be called the "Marlin Spike". It may have been advertised as both tools but modern use is now mainly as a "Marlin Spike" for the boating and rigging industry. It is used as an aid in untying rope knots or in splicing rope and making loop ends on a rope. The handles or scales appear to be made of a black fiber. Notice the Wood Saw has teeth that are angled back so that it cuts more on the "Pull" cycle.

Victorinox First Mate-Alox Mariner type knife (SOLD)

Another fellow collector found this rare and hard to find First Mate Alox model in Korea and helped me to get it. These have the Marlinspike or Sacking Needle and a Pruner blade. Also note too the brass liners and old style white cross shield on the red checkered alox. Also note the cut out in the rear scale for the Marlinspike to rest into. The craftsmanship is flawless. Victorinox truly can make works of art out of simple hand tools.
