Victorinox New Style German Army Knife Comparison

These 2 German Army knives are made by Victorinox. The main difference to notice is the hole in the main blade used for opening it. The early models had the oval hole while later more current models have a round hole. While I do not know why Victorinox changed this feature I am sure it was due to field use and any reported problems.

The 111mm Victorinox Hunter model is a unique knife. This one comes with OD Green nylon scales with a Deer printed design on the front scale. Some of these models are known to have come in plain red nylon both with and without the Deer and Camouflage scales. The main blade is of the slide lock style with a plain edge. There is a wood saw, awl/reamer, corkscrew, keyring, toothpick and tweezers.

The really special part about this knife is that it has a combo tool and a gutting blade, found only on a couple of 111mm models. The combo tool is the same design as the smaller 91mm version but is thicker and more robust. The gutting blade is a curved serrated blade made for dressing out a large animal while hunting, however this tool could be used for many other tasks. Some note that it has nearly the same design as the safety blade on a Fireman or Rescue Tool for cutting seat belts safely away from accident victims.

This Victorinox Mauser knife has an interesting background. It is based upon the 108mm size GAK or German Army Knife produced by Victorinox and several other manufacturers from around 1984 until 2001. According to Victorinox there were about 250,000 units made. Originally it came with a dark green box with Mauser logo and a booklet identifying the tools in several languages. The Mauser has an extra clip pointed blade added to the basic GAK and the Mauser logo added to the front scale. The clip blade has special writing including the Mauser logo and words saying it is officially licensed from Mauser Werke who produces military guns for the German Army and many other nations.

The knife has a spear pointed main blade with the Victorinox tang stamping. The clip pointed secondary blade does not have any tang stamping at all. There is a Wood Saw combo tool blade with a saw tooth protector, an awl/reamer and a corkscrew. The scales are made of OD Green nylon with a checkered finish and are very tough and durable. The Mauser logo is printed on in white in the flat blank area on the front scale. The knife is also equipped with a lanyard hole going all the way through the knife at the rear end of the knife. These knives have become very collectible.

This knife is the civilian version of the Victorinox made GAK or German Army Knife from the 1980's. The main differences are this one does not have the Bundeswehr military shield embossed into the front scale. Rather it has a plain empty rectangle where the shield would go. It is still dressed in Olive Drab Green military color scales and has all the exact same tools as the standard GAK.

This is a Victorinox Rucksack model with OD Green nylon scales. The color is rather uncommon with this shield style here in North America and I placed a comparison photo with a Standard older GAK to show its color is the same. The shield is hot stamped into the scales. This model has the slide lock button on the back side.

Here is a standard GAK or German Army Knife from the 1980's with the "NATO" star designation on the handle. Most GAK's have the "Bundeswehr" Eagle on the scale but there were different other military organizations that were supplied with a model with their own insignia on it.
